The above JUDITH & GARFIELD REEVES-STEVENS tweet has been garnering a lot of attention on the internet. so CPL! reached out to the Goddard Film Group for more information. In the tweet, the two head writers for PHOENIX RISING imply that there are new toy/figures in the works. Here is what CPL! has learned:

We had a meeting with someone from Mattel. We have a first look deal with them, but [we] strongly feel this new show should not have any toys at the moment. It’s not really where we want the focus to be at. What we’re aiming for is a line of highly detailed Classic Captain Power figures along the lines of Masters of the Universe Classics for adult collectors.

We’ll see how everything turns out.

That seems like the right call. Avoiding figures/toys makes a lot of sense given the original series’ complicated relationship with its toy line (to say the least) as well as the more adult-oriented direction PHOENIX RISING is aiming to take.

But hopefully the Goddard Film Group isn’t too gun-shy about getting involved with toys/figures at some point in the future; after all, displaying a few new “highly detailed Classic Captain Power” figure prototypes at major toy shows would be a great way to remind people of the original series and generate buzz for the new PHOENIX RISING reboot. Additionally, even though it might be true that the toy line bogged down the original series, many people’s fond memories and childhood connections with CAPTAIN POWER are tied up with the toys and it would be a mistake to totally discount figures as a way of getting people to re-connect with the franchise.
